With the addition of the new machines, I finally completed Quarter Mountain. It’s a pyramid of quarters with a base of 24 rolls. It is 2 rolls deep, making the entire thing 600 rolls of quarters…and about 300 pounds. I actually ended up with 611 rolls, which worked out well since the back pyramid wasn’t very stable. The edge rolls on the bottom few levels would kick out causing a little avalanche. With the extra rolls, I could put a few more on the edge that would be up against the side of the hutch. With no where to go, the roll wouldn’t kick out, but the weight did bend the hutch really bad to the point where the drawer underneath it would no longer open due to the it hitting the bowing shelf.
I put the quarters in canvas bags. All of them could have easily fit in 2 or 3 bags volume wise, but the weight would have been 100 to 150 pounds per bag. I ended up putting them in about 10 bags and took them to the bank. The bank was in a grocery store which worked out well since I could grab a shopping cart, load all the bags in it, and then take it to the bank inside.
The bank really didn’t find it funny. After cashing in $4,000 worth, all my accounts were closed. The savings account I had was my first ever bank account that I opened as a minor with my mother. Apparently our history together meant nothing to the bank. I opened a new account at a different bank, but haven’t take any more quarters.

The auctions are going well. I am getting a lot of sales with most of them hitting around double what I paid. I had to buy some shipping supplies to keep things going out as fast as possible. I tend to reuse packaging materials from items that get shipped to me, but then I have to look for boxes and envelopes that are big enough to ship the item, but not too much bigger that it could make it a better fit for a larger item. The cost of the packing materials will cut into profits, but sales are high and consistent right now, so it isn’t too big of a deal.

Teaming up to do freelance work sounded pretty good in the beginning. Now, though, it’s just adding more complexity to something that wasn’t too complex to start with. With multiple people involved, everything I do affects them. Now we have to have a system that allows us to do what we need to while keep everyone else informed. It makes developing a lot slower, but should pay off in the end…I hope.

So after the big hard drive crash, I have been away for eBay for a little while. I got a few complaints. The worst part is, most of the complaints are lame. I am getting several emails asking for shipping numbers on orders that have already been delivered. I have a Paypal complaint now that was opened 3 days after the item was delivered. I am hoping Paypal sides with me, but there is still the issue with where the item is. I haven’t listed anything else on eBay since this, and at this rate, it will take me a couple more months to unload the wholesale order I placed back in December.

I was talking to some people I work with about getting some freelance work going. We decided on not doing custom programming, but to get involved in website flipping and turnkey sites. The nice thing about getting some other people involved is it should be quicker to get things done. Plus, it adds a little motivation. We are still working out the details on what exactly we should do, but if we do anything, it should help the cause. Our theory is, we will either make money doing whatever we do, or at the least, we should end up with something worth putting on our resumes. Either way, we benefit.

I had an external drive that crashed. I knew there was a problem, but I really didn’t care too much about it. It did have some website designs that I didn’t want to loose, but that was about it. I had some malware on my computer, so I ran a few programs to remove it. One of them said I needed to restart in order to get everything removed. I did that, and my computer didn’t want to boot again. It would boot up part way, and then restart, never loading Windows. After no luck fixing that, I was told to format the C:\ drive to see if the disk was bad. I formatted, and I finally got it to boot. I formatted some other stuff I needed, though.
When reinstalling Windows, I found out my DVD burner had also died. The plan is to order 2 new hard drives and a DVD burner from Newegg. The burner is to replace the one I had that died, and the 2 drives will be installed as a RAID to make sure I don’t lose anything else. I figure it’s now time to upgrade from XP to Windows 7 anyway, but doing it this is was definitely an inconvenience.

When I was doing some freelance work, I did 3 jobs in 2010 which I was never paid for. I finally got paid for 2 of them. The amounts were that great and total only $800. Still, at least I finally got the money. Collecting on bills is the worst part about being a freelance programmer.

So the new year is here, and that means it’s time to start collecting W2s for tax time. You know how they also list the total for the year and it always seems way higher than you actually made? My plan is to use the money from other ventures to pay for everything. The money I make from my job will remain unspent. The goal is, if I could do it for a year, the amount on my W2 should match what I have in the bank. The likelihood of this working for an entire year isn’t too great, and I will probably break down and place a wholesale order with the money, but I am going to see how long I can last. At least this way, every month I can look at my bank statement and pretend like I am making progress. The way I do it now is I look in my basement to see how much still I still have left to sell and try to guess the retail value of it.

So I was looking into getting some of the cost of the house financed. Most of the people I talked to couldn’t help, but I did get one person interested. The deal was weird, though. In order to borrow money, I would have to lease equipment from a leasing company the guy managed. After some Googling, the only thing I could find out about this was some speculation that the guy wasn’t licensed to loan money, and the equipment leasing was some trickery used to make the deal look like it wasn’t money loaned, but actually a lease deal. The guy was hard to get a hold of on the phone, so this never went anywhere. I am not back to making the money on my own.

The wholesale order is selling quite easily and for high profit thanks to Christmas coming up. I just hope that everything that I don’t get listed before the 25th still sells. The biggest issue now is getting the stuff shipped out in time so that it gets delivered before Christmas. I know I will get complaints if something is delivered on the 26th. I am trying to figure out the best way to keep track of my sales, though. I would like to be able to easily track how much everything is selling for, how much I pay in eBay and Paypal fees, and how much I spent on shipping per item. Right now, I am just using Excel, and it’s getting pretty tedious.
